Battlestar Galactica Season 4.5 Drive-By Spoiler

Posted by melancholygeek on July 29, 2008

BSGIn io9’s Morning Spoilers, there’s, among others, this little tidbit mentioned:

The BSG crew and their new Cylon allies strand Three (Lucy Lawless) on the wrecked Earth when they haul ass away from there. (Fascinating)

(Thanks to katee over at Skiffy for the reminder)

There’s also been talk about the question whether our beloved (?) Asshollo will die at the end of the series after an interview with Kristin. Well, nothing is really confirmed, but the person(s) behind Cyn City~ not only has the video but also some thoughts to it. And I have to quote at least some lines here (but make sure to go over there and read the whole thing, it’s good!):

I doubt that Jamie Bamber would agree with this but I think the pinnacle of his television career has been reached. I mean, he’s very enthused about yet another spin-off of CSI???

I sincerely do wish him well but I think he hasn’t yet gotten the perspective that Battlestar Galactica was the best television he’ll ever do–even though Lee “Apollo” Adama wasn’t the best rendered character on the series.

I rest my case. Nah, I’ll keep on ranting I guess 😉

Gah. I THINK I used to like him, every now and then, at least the actor, but… um. No. Not any more apparently. Also, he’s seems to be talking about Law and Order, not CSI. All the same in the end? Hm.

True. I forgot to put a [sic] in there I guess. But yeah, I guess he really doesn’t care too much about what he’s in (Pulse 2 anyone?), so CSI, L&O, whatevs. Something ‘on the telly’. Kinda sad when you look at the other BSG actors. Apart from GP I mean. (anyone who’s seen The Cleaner btw?)

not that it seems to make much sense to defend him, but he has said repeatedly that BSG is the best tv programm he’ll ever be involved in and that he is spoiled by the experience whereas others (e.g. katee) have said to be happy to move on. and what brilliant jobs did they get? the cleaner is godawful, i mean the whole premise it’s built on just makes me roll my eyes. and nip tuck, seriously? have you seen it lately? well probably not, cause noone has…
i think the acting business is hard, he has to make a living and support his family and we haven’t even seen the show yet, what do you want him to say “i’m working on this new show, might be crap…” of course he’ll be positive about it. a great deal of tv shows nowadways are shows like csi or law and order, so i guess they do have an audience.

well anyway i think you might be confusing your dislike of the character with the actor, which i sometimes do myself with other characters/actors, i just thought you were a little too harsh and personal

    @ava

First and foremost thanks for your input!

[…]but he has said repeatedly that BSG is the best tv programm he’ll ever be involved in[…]

You respond to that yourself best when you say:

[…]what do you want him to say “i’m working on this new show, might be crap…” of course he’ll be positive about it[…]

So I guess that goes both ways. And since you mention her, I was repeatedly appalled by some statements Katee Sackhoff made, so I’m with you at least on this one.

and what brilliant jobs did they get?

I was more thinking along the lines of Tahmoh Penikett (Dollhouse) and Tricia Helfer (Burn Notice). But thanks for the heads up concerning The Cleaner, I didn’t expect anything else. But concerning the career moves of some of the BSG characters, you might like to read this, posted earlier here (before I knew about the L&O:UK thing).

And concerning (supposedly) bad career moves and the film business being a harsh one, as you might have picked up in other posts on this blog, I’m a rather huge Callum Keith Rennie fan, so, yeah, a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do, obviously. So the he doesnt care too much about what he’s in bit actually is something I might have written about CKR just the same, even though I like him as an actor (and his character in BSG). And by Kinda sad I really meant just that. Thankfully CKR scored Californication, would he have don another L&O spin-off I might have been equally saddened.

Which brings us to your last point:

i think you might be confusing your dislike of the character with the actor

I can see where you might be getting this from, but rest assured: Fact is, I neither have much love for the Apollo character nor do I think of Jamie Bamber as a good actor. And that’s anything but personal, seeing that judging from the interviews I saw, he actually might be quite an okay guy, something I can’t say for all of BSG’s cast. But for me it’s a when it rains, it pours situation: A weak character portrayed by a weak actor.

    Hey,

Sorry about the sloppy writing on the Bamber quote.
I usually go back and try to clean up my late night posts but I missed this completely.
Thanks too, for the link and thanks for the info in re: Bamber’s next gig.

I feel exactly about Jamie Bamber as you do melancholygeek. He doesn’t do anything for me as an actor. I don’t know him personally at all (of course). Seems like a decent guy. But the reason I know of him isn’t to be his friend, it’s to watch him as you said, in a weak role alongside some towering talents. Sadly, he’s one of BSG’s weakest links. I’m sure he’ll do just fine on the London-based L & O.

Oh yes, Callum Keith Rennie! I love his attitude. He is a working actor. And that’s way better than being an unemployed actor I’m guessing. I think he’s awesome in BSG. Nails the part.

    I so know what you mean… 😉

    You’re very welcome.

Concerning JB, well, what’s more to say? I surely wouldn’t mind seeing him in something good and nailing it, but, as for some other BSG actors, I won’t go hunting for it.

And concerning CKR, should you be interested in (and not already familiar with) his other work, you should check out the CKR-files, a fan-maintained archive of all things Rennie. Lots of diamonds (some in the rough, admittedly) to be discovered there.

Thanks again for the Callum Keith Rennie link. 😉
I ended up at IMDb out of curiosity…just to see how rough those diamonds were.
What struck me more is that he’s got a tonne of work in the can (to be released), post production stuff, pre-production–he works constantly!

I’m not a big fan of Californication but I’ll watch the 5 episodes he’s in.

  8. While IMDb is a good place to start, it’s usually appropriately dubbed the Inaccurate Movie Database for a reason (e.g. word is Callum will be in something like 10 episodes in Season 2 of Californication rather than 5). Hence the linkage to the CKR-Files, info there is usually quite more reliable and you actually get an impression of the work he’s done so far.

If you’re interested in more Rennie and perhaps even Canadian film and TV in general, I’d recommend watching Due South (season 3+4 star CKR) and Twitch City for TV and concerning movies you must not miss Hard Core Logo (which is in the process to be turned into a franchise, although IMDb doesn’t seem to have heard of it yet) and probably would enjoy something along the lines of Wilby Wonderful and Last Night.

OK, that totally would have deserved a post of its own now… 🙂

I guess I’d best start liking the show then. 😉
Very true about IMDb. I use it mostly to get info, quick and dirty. When time permits I delve more deeply elsewhere. No worries. I’ve bookmarked CKR-files. 🙂

I try to follow (and promote whenever possible) Canadian actors though until the last 5-10 years, I found most Canadian tv series just scary bad American tv rip offs.
I now realize I’ve missed quite a bit and will need to slowly go back and get acquainted. Thanks for giving me a starting place.

I agree completely. Looking forward to it! 🙂

    Again, thanks!
