A Little Something For The Pain

Posted by melancholygeek on April 18, 2009

dollhouseBSGSo, BSG is long over and not even a new Dollhouse episode this week. Such a shame. And seeing that Flashpoint is also on break and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles in limbo between seasons, I decided to give something somewhat older a chance this weekend: Tru Calling.

Tru Calling stars Whedon-veteran Eliza Dushku as Tru, a girl working in a morgue and having quite an odd connection to the recently deceased. No, not such a connection! Every once in a while (aka every episode), a corpse asks her for help and when that happens, she gets to re-live the day in order to stop whatever caused the death of said person. Add a little family drama and it’s a bit Groundhog Day meets Six Feet Under, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. And Tru Calling definitely isn’t.

Apart from the (so far) not-overly-compelling-but-nice story you get Eliza Dushku, which is always a plus, and her rather cute brother, played by Shawn Reaves, who is basically a, well, cute version of Matthew McConaughey.

And another thing for you BSG-deprived people out there: The pilot stars – as the semi-baddie of course – Callum Keith Rennie! And not enough with that, next the cylon comes up in the second episode, Michael Trucco aka. Mr. September (watch the episode, you’ll probably like what you see). And the guest spots are filled with quite some interesting people in general, so far I’ve spotted HeroesLeonard Roberts (D.L. Hawkins, back in the days when the series was actually good) and Chuck‘s Matthew Bomer (Bryce Larkin).

So, even though Whedonites ought to have mixed emotions concerning Tru Calling, seeing that Eliza Dushku turned down the Buffy spin-off Faith for this, go check it out. It’s definitely worth it.

Battlestar Galactica 4×13 ‘The Oath’ SciFi Trailer and Tidbits

Posted by melancholygeek on January 24, 2009

BSGSo, the issues that keep me from writing up original stuff here still persist, so it’s canned food for you again (in case you’re interested though, ADFMS impression is Awesome, 5/5 and not just because of the final minute):

Firstly, eat that, Dirk Benedict [via battlestar blog]

Secondly: io9 has some seriously neat cylony goodness here.

Thirdly (is that even a word?), I’d pay quite some money to know Callum Keith Rennie’s reaction to this [via AVSS]

And finally, the main part of this post, mutiny mayhem in next week’s episode, thanks to indysid:

Trinity In Space Impressions Day 1

Posted by melancholygeek on November 27, 2008

BSGAs mentioned earlier, I spent the weekend out of town, namely in the lovely Bad Salzdetfurth, Germany, and frankly, that’s about as far out of town you can possibly get. Seriously, when ever you feel like getting away from it all and you happen to be in Germany, BaSa (as I’ll abbreviate it from now on) is the place for you.

Not so this last weekend though, for the local hotel housed the Trinity In Space Convention, organized by Wolfevents, a joint convention for all things Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and, you might have guessed it, Battlestar Galactica.

Before I dive into the unspeakable abyss of awesome (much) and gruesome (little) that was this weekend, some starters to set things into perspective.

a) I had never been to a con before. I just never thought me the type to drool over celebrities, put on weird costumes and rub shoulders with sweaty, smelly nerds (yup, that’s what I imagined cons to be. Sue me.).

b) Stargate for me is a decent movie starring Kurt Russell. Of course I was aware of the way the franchise had developed, but I never consciously watched any episode of SG-1 or SGA.

c) The one and only reason for me to decide to go there was the appearance of Callum Keith Rennie, whom, as an actor, I admire beyond what is healthy. The fact that I’d meet some other people there I had contact over the internets with of course put the cream and chocolate sprinkles on top, but I booked everything mainly because of The Rennie. Of course, he canceled a couple of days before the event.

So, was it the best of times? Was it the worst of times? Find out after the cut.

BSG Con Update: No Callum This Weekend, The Geek Is Shattered

Posted by melancholygeek on November 17, 2008

BSGSince I mentioned Callum Keith Rennie’s supposed appearance at this week’s Trinity In Space convention in Bad Salzdetfurth before, here’s an update to the story: No, he won’t.

As announced on wolfevents’ german website (and here on battlestar blog), Callum cancelled his appearance, most probably due to his filming for the new TV pilot Shattered, in which he’ll play the role of an ex-cop with multiple personality disorder (check out scriggle‘s tight coverage of anything Shattered here, here, here and here). While him starring in a new series is of course cause for much rejoicing, it’s still bad news for anyone attending the Con basically because of Callum and especially those who’ve never watched anything Stargate and don’t have the slightest clue at all who the other guests are. As you might have already guessed: I’m one of them.

This of course also means that there probably won’t be the extensive Con coverage here that I planned for (wolfevents is trying to get a replacement but knowing my luck it’ll be Bamber or Clyne) but I’ll nevertheless might drop a line or two about the event.

And yes, I’m still looking forward to this weekend, seeing that I’ll meet a lot of great people there anyway, Callum or no Callum. *sulk*

[Kara/Leoben Shipper Week] The Grand Finale

Posted by melancholygeek on October 19, 2008

BSGA week is over and I hope you had fun. And what else to end this shipper week with if not the extended White Paint scene from Maelstrom? Have fun! (courtesy of aguid23) (Supposedly this clip is not suitable for minors. Just saying.)

[Kara/Leoben Shipper Week] Battlestar Galactica 1×08 ‘Flesh And Bone’ Impressions

Posted by melancholygeek on October 18, 2008

BSGWhat better way to celebrate Kara/Leoben Shipper Week than with a little recap of the first K/L episode, Flesh And Bone. (I might abbreviate Kara/Leoben like this occasionally and you should know by now that it doesn’t stand for Kara/Leland, right?)

One word of warning: These impressions are rather picture-heavy, hence the cut below.

We’re well into the first season, there’s way too many Boomers around, The Cylons do look like us now, and we are even allowed to know it and the original Apollo goes now by the name of Zarek and is a terrorist. No Cylon though (as far as we know).

Glowy-pretty Roslin in nightgown walking through a forest. My guess: dreaming. Of soldiers. Hmm. And wildly gesturing, creepy Leoben:

[Kara/Leoben Shipper Week] FANFIC!

Posted by melancholygeek on October 17, 2008

BSGSeeing that I still don’t feel all too capable of coming up with original material, it might be a good idea to advertise some stuff other people wrote:

Thanks to my recent detour to livejournal-land, I was pointed to quite some nice places (on LJ of course) to find Kara/Leoben fanfic, and I guess this shipper-week is quite an alright opportunity to share. Be warned, some of these are a bit spoilery shouldn’t you have watched BSG up to the last aired episode:

First and foremost I’d like to recommend the lovely story Bravado by mdbsgfan, which in many ways captures what I think is the essence of the Kara/Leoben relationship.

If you’re more up for something to laugh about, and that very heartily, make sure you check out alissabobissa‘s hilarious A Two Is A Two.

If you feel more like browsing collections of fanfic, make sure you pass by the communities Trial By Water and The Community for Kara Thrace / Leoben Conoy lovers, karaben.

And speaking of collections, green_grrl compiled a nice list of Six Degrees of Due South fic. While you probably don’t know what the Six Degrees stand for (which calls for a Canada week sometime soon I guess), just rest assured there’s a Battlestar Galactica section there, dealing mostly with Kara/Leoben. And a lot of other great stories, too!

[Kara/Leoben Shipper Week] Loaded Gun

Posted by melancholygeek on October 16, 2008

BSGWouldn’t you know, yet another fanvid! I’m not feeling all too well lately, so that makes it a bit hard to focus on writing up original stuff. Plus the wordpress image uploading thingy is acting up on me. But the lovely Tyrella once again saves the day by pointing me to this quite intriguing vid by latteaddict, Loaded Gun:

[Kara/Leoben Shipper Week] Haunted Dreams

Posted by melancholygeek on October 15, 2008

BSGOK, I really didn’t want this to be a “fanvids all week” thing, but I’m really locked up with other stuff and that’s just my easy way out. Bear with me, I do have other stuff in stock. But until then, enjoy aguid23‘s fanvid to Wish FM’s Haunted Dreams (this one’s for Tyrella):

[Kara/Leoben Shipper Week] Angel

Posted by melancholygeek on October 14, 2008

BSGAs you can imagine, it’s a little difficult to do a Kara/Leoben fanvid to Shiny Happy People. So this isn’t:
